It’s always a smart plan to try to save as much money as possible. I mean, who couldn’t use some extra cash right now? These brilliant tips for How to Save Money When You’re Almost Broke will help you keep your finances under control and supercharge your savings!
Are you ready for these easy ways to save money on a tight budget? Here’s what you’ll do…
How To Save Money When You’re Almost Broke
1. Eat at Home
The first step to saving money is to stop eating out. Cooking at home is not only surprisingly easy, it can save you so much money every month! Keep you meals easy with some of my favorite recipes below…

2: Make a Grocery List… and Stick To It
When you go grocery shopping for the week, make sure to always take a list with you. This little trick is such an easy way to help you from buying random impulse items you don’t need. Instead, create a list of all your snacks and ingredients you need to buy before you leave the house, then stick to it. Another great idea is to never shop on an empty stomach. It’s crazy what can find it’s way into your cart when you’ve got a growling stomach at the grocery store. Don’t ask me how I know. 🙂
3. Pay Cash for Groceries
Paying cash for your groceries is such a smart way to avoid overspending. I recommend using the envelope system. At the beginning of each month, you’ll simply take your cash and divide it into separate envelopes designated for specific shopping trips.
This will help you have a hard limit for spending on each shopping trip. If you were using a credit card, it would be much easier to spend more than your budget, but now you’ll only be able to spend whatever cash is in the envelope. This is such an easy trick to help you stick to your budget, and yes… it may mean you end up putting some things back before you head to the checkout line.
4. Never Pay Full Price for Coffee

You can also try making coffee at home to save even more. Check out some of these ground coffee options…

5. Always Shop With Free Gift Cards
It’s so much fun to shop when you’re saving tons of money, right? Slash your budget using these Easy Ways to Earn FREE Gift Cards to buy things you would need to buy already… Groceries, Home Products, Toys, Electronics, etc! Then watch those savings really start to add up!
6. Shop Around For Cheaper Insurance
How long has it been since you’ve reviewed your insurance plans? Many insurance companies will slowly raise your premiums over time and will hope you don’t notice. To make sure I’m getting the best deal, I like to call other insurance companies once a year to shop around for cheaper rates… you’ll be amazed at how much you can save!
Some of the plans you can save big on include home, life, health, and car insurance. So take some time this month to shop around and see if you can find a better deal!
7. Sell Your Car & Get Out of Your Car Payment
A car loan can eat up a huge portion of your earnings. If you’re able to, consider selling your car so you’re free from your loan.
Then, you may want to look for an older used car that you’re able to now pay cash for. I prefer affordable and reliable cars that also have low maintenance costs.
8. Cancel Extra Subscriptions
Monthly subscriptions can be convenient, but they all add up. Consider canceling subscriptions you don’t use often… thinks might include things like Netflix, Hulu, Magazines, Newspapers, Spotify, Apple Music, and Gym Memberships. You’ll be amazed how much money you can save!
I like to use iHeart Radio to get free music, radio and podcasts right on my phone.
9. Cut Cable
Are you wondering how to watch tv without cable or satellite? Cut the cable and watch tv for free with an HD Digital Antenna! I love using an antenna, and it has saved me SO much money over the years!
10. Adjust Your Thermostat
Utility costs also have a way of creeping up in the Summer and Winter, so don’t forget to adjust your thermostat often to make sure you’re not spending too much in this area. In the Summer, consider turning your A/C up to save money on your electricity bill and use ceiling fans or floor fans.
In the Winter, consider turning your heat down and use your fireplace or wood burning stove to heat your home. I like to also use extra blankets and sweatshirts as an inexpensive way to stay warm.
11. Rent Out a Room
If you own a house, rent out a spare room to earn some extra cash. Or if you’re renting and it’s okay with your landlord, you can invite a friend to move in and split the rent.
12. Find a Cheaper Place to Live
When difficult circumstances arise, it may be hard to continue paying the rent on your home. If you need to, consider looking for a cheaper place to live further out from the center of the city. Suburbs and rural areas often have lower rents.
13. Sell What You Don’t Need
Another easy way to make some extra money while getting organized at the same time is to purge your home and sell what you don’t need. Consider selling items on Craig’s List, eBay, or having a garage sale. Then, use the earnings to pay off debts.
14. Use the Debt Snowball
Is debt keeping you from your goals? An effective way to quickly pay off your debt is by using the debt snowball. Basically you’ll simply pay off all your debts, starting with the smallest and gradually moving on to the largest.
Once you eliminate your smallest debts, you can use all the money you save in interest to tackle the larger debts one by one until they’re all gone!
15. Try a No-Spend Month
If you need to save a lot of money quickly, consider trying a no-spend month. You’ll only spend money on bills and necessities for 30 days. Some expenses you can temporarily cut include…
- Shopping for Clothes
- Restaurants
- Entertainment
- Vacations
Don’t worry, a no-spend month doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. To keep yourself entertained you can play board games with friends and family, visit local parks, or work on that DIY project you’ve always wanted to try. You’ll be surprised how fast the savings will add up!
